What is Family and Systemic Psychotherapy?

Family therapy, also known as systemic psychotherapy, is a powerful approach that focuses on understanding and improving the dynamics within a family system. It recognises that each member of the family influences and is influenced by the others, and that challenges within one member can impact the entire family.

How can Family Therapy help?

Family therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of issues, including:

  • Family relationship difficulties

  • Child and adolescent mental health issues

  • Adult mental health issues

  • Child, adolescent and adult behaviour difficulties

  • Parenting issues

  • Illness and disability in the family

  • Separation, divorce and step-family life

  • Fostering, adoption, kinship care and the needs of ‘looked after’ children

  • Domestic violence and abuse

  • Self-harm

  • Drug and alcohol misuse

  • The effects of trauma

  • Physical illness, death, dying and bereavement

  • Difficulties related to ageing and other life cycle changes

Services

For Professionals

- Specialist Support for care experienced children, young people and their families (Commissioned by Professionals Who Need More Than the System Can Provide)

We understand the challenges your team faces when working with care-experienced children, high-risk families, and adolescents on the edge of breakdown.

When traditional services haven’t worked — and the family system feels too complex to hold — we step in.

Our commissioned packages are designed for professionals, agencies, and teams who need to refer families for specialist systemic support. We work with the family directly, while offering insight, updates, and collaboration with the professionals involved.

What’s Included in the Package

🔹 Systemic Family Support – direct therapeutic parenting input and crisis stabilisation

🔹 Individual psychotherapy for young person - providing young person an additional  safe space to work through their feelings and make sense of their experiences
🔹 Case Consultation & Progress Reports – collaborative working with the commissioning team
🔹 Psychoeducation for Parents – grounded in family systems, behavioural science, and attachment
🔹 Optional Reflective Practice – available for staff involved in complex family care

Our approach

The SA²F²E Model is a systemically-led, trauma-informed framework designed to support care-experienced children, families, and the professionals around them. Blending family therapy, psychology, trauma recovery, child development psychoanalysis and emotional development, it uses six key pillars — Safe, Attachment, Acceptance, Family Functioning, Flexibility, and Emotional Literacy — to restore connection, reduce crisis behaviours, and build lasting resilience within families.

Who Commissions Us

  • Local authorities seeking additional family support

  • Residential or educational teams facing family disengagement

  • Social workers and safeguarding leads managing repeated breakdown

  • Agencies supporting foster carers, adoption or kinship families in crisis

Why Professionals Choose Us

Because your team is already doing everything it can.
Because the system doesn’t have the right container for these cases.
Because this family needs more than a referral — they need a reset.

We offer that reset — delivered with clinical integrity, system-wide perspective, and the clarity to move forward.

- Systemic Training - Seeing the Whole Story

A 3-Day Training in Systemic, Healing-Centred Practice for Care-Experienced Children, Young People, and Families

Overview:

Frontline practitioners are being asked to do more than ever — holding complex emotional risk, responding to trauma, and stabilising young people with disrupted attachments and painful histories.

But real, lasting change doesn’t come from more strategies. It comes from changing the system around the child. This training is different.

Developed by systemic psychotherapist and organisational consultant Pei-I Yang, Seeing the Whole Story introduces the SA²F²E model — a relational, and systemically-driven framework designed to help practitioners become part of a young person’s healing journey.

You won’t just walk away with tools. You’ll walk away with a new way of seeing.

Who This Training Is For:

  • Residential care teams

  • Foster carers and kinship support workers

  • Therapeutic keyworkers

  • Family support practitioners

  • Youth justice workers

  • Safeguarding, inclusion, and pastoral leads

  • Social care and multi-agency professionals

Seeing the Whole Story changes the culture of care from the inside out. Teams move beyond surface behaviour management to build meaningful, healing relationships with young people — leading to greater placement stability and long-term emotional resilience. At the same time, staff are supported to work reflexively and relationally, reducing burnout, increasing retention, and restoring a sense of purpose and possibility in their roles. When healing becomes a shared practice, everyone grows.

Seeing the Whole Story is available as both individual practitioner training(next cohort 17th July, 2025)  and full team delivery. Whether you're a frontline worker seeking deeper tools for relational care, or a service lead looking to embed systemic, healing-centred practice across your team — this training meets you where you are. It's designed to strengthen individual confidence and collective capacity.
